eBay Watch: Don't Be Cruel
By Devin Comiskey

February 24, 2006

And now, the news.

Socaltech.com reported this morning that eBay's Rent.com subsidiary launched a new company called GigaMoves, to target the online lead generation market for moving companies.

"The new company is an online lead-generation service that connects customers with moving companies, as well as providing account management, pay-per-lead pricing, and tracking of leads. The move comes a day after competitor Homestore renamed itself to Move, Inc. and said that it will focus in on the same, moving lead market," Socaltech reported.

Sell That Desk!
Marketworks, a multi-channel e-commerce solution provider, today announced the launch of PerfectAD, a listing solution targeted specifically to eBay's business equipment sellers. Marketworks, a member of the eBay Developers Program and an eBay Certified Solution Provider, developed PerfectAD to help large equipment sellers efficiently create comprehensive eBay listings to quickly sell bulky, high-priced items.

"As a trusted eBay developer, Marketworks was able to work closely with eBay to help identify areas of improvement for the buying and selling of business equipment," said Ken Powell, Chief Executive Officer of Marketworks. "As a result, Marketworks developed PerfectAD, an easy-to-use listing solution that helps business equipment sellers create compelling and informative ads. By giving business equipment sellers the resources needed to better address potential buyers' interests, we anticipate PerfectAD will help sellers bring more buyer traffic and additional bidding to their listings," added Powell.

PerfectAD claims to simplify selling large industrial equipment online by automatically prompting a seller for all of the relevant information a prospective equipment buyer needs to make a bid or purchase on eBay. It provides key attribute fields based on the class of product being sold with pre-populated drop-down menus so that sellers can choose the correct attribute for their equipment. For example, if a customer is selling a backhoe, PerfectAD will specifically prompt the seller to select the correct bucket size, digging depth, model number and other key attributes buyers are seeking.

PerfectAD accommodates up to 25 images and has links to "best-practice" guides that educate sellers about creating great eBay listings. Finally, PerfectAD suggests an ideal title for the listing based on the attributes the seller has selected, saving the seller time and making their listing more appealing to prospective buyers.

For businesses that are looking for a turn-key solution, Marketworks also offers a "managed e-commerce" service for businesses that do not have the time or resources to regularly list larger volumes of product, manage customer inquiries, and process orders. A seller can simply send Marketworks a file and associated images of their inventory and Marketworks will manage the sales process from start to finish.

From San Jose to Mumbai
SiliconIndia reported this week that eBay CEO Meg Whitman told an Indian audience that India is the fastest growing online market.

"eBay here reminds me of eBay in the U.S. around 1998-99. India is still six-seven years behind the U.S. and about three-four years behind Europe," Whitman said during a press conference.

With a seemingly unlimited growth potential — given India's population of over one billion people — eBay's prospects there look promising. "In most countries where eBay has a presence, the environment is fairly hospitable with simple tax structures and government legislation is also conducive to facilitating online trade. India is quite a good place to do business in this respect," Whitman added.

New Gallery Tool
eBay newcomer CrossPitch has recently released a fully customizable listing tool for eBay sellers, the CrossPitch Gallery. Similar to Vendio's Gallery tool, CrossPitch Gallery allows sellers to display an interactive, scrolling gallery in their auctions in order to drive cross-selling opportunities and increase listing exposure.

For a monthly fee ($2.95 to $9.95 depending on the number of listed items), the Crosspitch gallery will import itself into all of a seller's live and future eligible eBay listings automatically. The gallery includes latest bid price, Buy It Now (BIN) price and when the auction ends.

Auction of the Week — Uh huh

There's no rhyme or reason we selected this item as our auction of the week other than we think it's hilarious.

Elvis may be long gone, but his fans apparently aren't. That's why seller vivavegas777 isn't having a hard time getting bids for a new Elvis peacock jumpsuit costume with a belt.

"The Peacock jumpsuit, used during a 1974 tour, proved to be one of Elvis' personal favorites. A white jumpsuit with a V-neck and high collar, the Peacock features a large blue and gold bird rendered in a stylized design on both the front and back. The peacock was the most expensive jumpsuit Elvis ever had made, costing over $10,000. The peacock designs were hand embroidered with gold thread," says the seller.

"The belt includes gold medallions that alternate with designs that look like the eye of a peacock feather. Elvis was attracted to peacocks because they represent eternal life. At one time, he kept a few of the birds at Graceland, but he gave them to the Memphis Zoo after one of them ruined the surface of his Roll Royce," he added.

The best part of the seller's description: "If you currently own a jumpsuit that fits you nicely, please match those measurements with the measurements below in order to determine if this jumpsuit will fit."

Be your own hunk o' burnin' love by beating the current winning bid of $499.
