How to Transfer Domain Ownership
By DomainBook.com Staff
July 25, 2000

Once your domain name is sold, you will need to transfer ownership to the new owner. This is a simple administrative process involving your domain registry, your domain hosting company and the new user''s domain hosting company.

The domain registry must be notified that there is a new owner for the domain, and the domain hosting companies must be notified that the domain is moving to a new physical location. Often, the new owner''s domain hosting company will contact the domain registry and perform the transfer for you. Typically, you must notify your domain hosting company of this move as well.

For instance, in the United States, the principal domain registry is InterNIC and a common domain hosting company is Exodus. Another common domain hosting company is Netcom. If you had your domain hosted by Exodus and sold it to someone who wished to have the domain hosted by Netcom, Netcom would perform the paper work to notify InterNIC of the move on behalf of the new owner and would set-up the domain on their machines. You would inform Exodus that they should remove the domain name from their machines. If you and the new owner operated the machines yourselves instead of using hosting services, then your system administrators would cooperate to perform this same task.
