What Sells Well?
By Robyn Greenspan
October 6, 2000

When dreaming up ideas for your e-business, keep in mind that not everything sells well over the web. Some products are more difficult for customers to buy without being able to touch, taste, try on or sample first. Don''t expect consumable products that are not readily available to the public to be big sellers on the web.

If the items you are selling are products that are commonly found in stores, such as certain perfumes, customers will order online for convenience or price. But if you manufacture your own line of scented soaps, it will be more difficult to make a sale online since sensitivity to taste and smell varies greatly from person to person.

Laws and tax regulations can also restrict your online operation. Obviously, illegal drugs are out of the question, as are explosives. To further complicate matters, it may be legal to sell certain merchandise in some states but not others, such as fireworks. Also, you are able to sell Cuban cigars from your Canada-based e-store but you are prohibited from shipping them into the United States. Since the legal parameters differ greatly between states and countries, it is advisable that you get proper legal advice before fully embarking on your e-endeavor.

If you plan on selling alcohol, tobacco or items that are illegal for children to purchase or possess, you have to make sure all the necessary checkpoints are in place before you launch your site. The new Internet economy has inspired many legal precedents and you''ll want to protect yourself from liability.

In addition to seeking the help of an attorney, the services of an accountant will be needed too. The cost of doing business on a national or global level may be cost-prohibitive due to taxes, customs and duties. Being aware of what tax laws apply to the areas where you are doing business can save you a lot of money before you start up.

One of the best measurements for what sells well on the Internet is common sense. If you are likely to buy a specific product online, others might be so inclined too. Starting an ecommerce business requires money and valuable time, so it is advisable to seek the expertise of professionals. Paying for valuable advice before you get started is a good investment that will continue to give you a positive return.
