Making a Pop Exit
By Robyn Greenspan
December 20, 2001

Making a Pop ExitWhether you find them completely annoying or surprisingly informative, pop advertising has become almost a necessary evil. The ubiquitous windows help subsidize the Internet and keep a lot of Web content available for free.

And despite how users feel about pop ads, they do manage to convey a message and inspire an action so many Web companies are incorporating them into their online marketing campaigns.

Exit advertising is a method of delivering pop-under ad windows as users leave your site. Without interrupting the user's surfing, an ad will appear beneath their current browser window when they click off your URL, where it will remain unobtrusively. When the user finishes the Internet session, or closes active windows, the ad message will be waiting underneath. The user has the option of reading the message or closing the window, but in either case, the ad will have been noticed.

ExitBlaze and ExitDirect are free services that provide the targeted pop-under ads that users will encounter as they leave your site. The added bonus to these services is that they help direct traffic back to your site. If you get others to sign up for the service, you earn traffic too, similar to an affiliate service and banner exchange program.

ExitBlaze's method garners you a traffic hit every six times someone leaves your site or a referred friend's site, increasing exponentially for four levels. ExitDirect operates on a 1:1 ratio. For every unique exit that you send them, they launch one sponsored ad and then send an affiliate hit back to you.

This type of advertising isn't for everyone. Evaluate your business and the image you hope to present before embarking on a pop-under exit campaign.
