Your Body IS Your PIN!
By Mark Merkow, CCP, CISSP

You Are You!

One fingerprint recognition device, called U.are.U, comes from Digital Persona The U.are.U sensor (shown below) offers touch activated fingerprint capture, automatic correction for latent prints, comes with a secured interface that uses challenges and responses for image encryption, works with Universal Serial Bus interfaces, provides verification in under a second, and costs less than $200. Software is available for Windows 95 and Windows 98. Digital Persona also provides a software developers kit (SDK) that enables integrating the system into custom-developed applications for corporate or E-commerce uses.

Other fingerprint recognition systems are also available. The BioMouse from American Biometric Company is a combination fingerprint and SmartCard reader that works under Windows 95, Windows 98, NT, DOS, Solaris, Linix, IRIX, and HP-UX.

National Registry Inc., the developers of the Human Authentication Application Program Interface (HA-API), offers Secure Authentication Facility (SAF) products for various computer platforms. You can also find biometric devices from Identix Corporation, Biometric Access Corp (BAC)., as well as several others. In the June edition of Network Computing magazine, six biometric devices are reviewed for their suitability in enterprise security.

Now That''s Using Your Head

Although hands are the most commonly used body part, biometrics are possible on other human attributes too. A voice verification system is used to speed up travel between Montana and Canada for those who cross the border frequently, inmates at Cook County Jail in Illinois are subject to retinal scans as they come and go to court appearances, finger image matching is used for welfare recipients in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, Coca-Cola uses a hand geometry scanner to prevent employees from punching someone else''s time card. Written signatures may be used for dual purposes, especially with financial transactions or other applications where signatures are needed to identify someone. Over 100 patents have been issued for signature recognition systems alone. Facial recognition and vein recognition are two other biometrics that have caught the attention of security experts since they represent viable alternatives to fingerprint recognition systems alone.

Keystroke systems are another biometric that could serve as a means to personal identification. Researchers have found that people''s typing habits are unique enough to capture information about them that''s suitable for ID uses.
