By Mark Merkow, CCP, CISSP April 1, 1999 One of the most challenging threats to e-commerce security is user password management. In Let''s Talk About Threats . . . Installment One we looked at some of the common problems with passwords, and in Shaping E-commerce Security Blankets we looked at how you can improve on passwords using tighter controls. Bringing an end to password problems is a new and innovative system from ID Arts, called Passfaces. Building on the research of cognitive scientists, called Cognometrics, Passfaces take advantage of human''s innate abilities to instantly recognize human faces they''ve seen before. Passfaces uses this ability to establish a challenge and response mechanism for logging into computer-systems. "ID Arts'' mission is to establish the Passface identity verification system as the de facto standard for an alternative to passwords and PINs on the Internet and elsewhere in the digital world." With Passfaces embedded into your e-commerce application front-ends, users can only gain access after all their pre-selected Passfaces are correctly chosen from 4 grids of randomly placed Passfaces. The Passfaces Web client can operate either as a Java applet or an Active-X control. |
