Let's Talk About Threats... Installment One
By Mark Merkow, CCP, CISSP
October 8, 1998

"This is a game for these guys, but for us it was like a tornado came through the building and ripped our lives apart."
- Eric Paul, VP Aye.net, describing an August 15, 1998 security breach of their networks.

Your e-commerce site is vulnerable. How vulnerable it is depends on you. E-commerce areas make a terrific target for cyberpunks and would-be thieves, from both outside -- and inside -- your organization.

We''ve spent a great deal of ink covering the technologies commonly used to enhance network protection, but we really haven''t begin to discuss why they''re critical to success.

Beginning with this week''s column, we''ll focus on multiple aspects of e-commerce security to both help you understand the omnipresent risks and how you can protect yourself through vigilance and determination.

Because e-commerce sites are financial by nature, computer thieves see them as gold and jewels just waiting to be snatched up. Credit card information is a favorite among these thieves, and your duty is to protect that data at all costs. A single severe breach of security will likely sound the death knell for your site and you may never see any ''second chances'', especially as your competition heats up.

Sales on the Internet are increasing as consumer confidence -- and trust -- build up. This necessary level of trust can never be taken for granted and must be constantly reassured.
